Playing a mix of original and traditional material influenced alot by the music of Romania and Bulgaria, The North Strand Kontra Band joined forces in late 2005. Having performed at many leading venues and festivals both nationally and internationally, the seven-piece group continue to create high energy music. NOISE caught up with the guys to talk influences, and what the music scene in Dublin is like lately……

‘The best party band to hit Ireland in the last few years’ (Irish Times)

Your sound is inspired largely by Eastern European Folk music, can you tell us about any artists that you admire, or who may have inspired your sound?

I suppose our music is most notably influenced by the contemporary and traditional music from countries like Romania, Serbia and Bulgaria with some of our heroes being people like Ionica Minune, Petar Ralchey and Aleksandar Sisic to name a few. That said, within the band we’re lucky to have some great musicians from different backgrounds collaborating on the sound which makes for an electric melting pot of influences.

What’s the music scene like in Dublin at the moment? Is it difficult for emerging artists to make their mark?

It can certainly be difficult for a large band but in general there seems to be a strong movement for all kinds of music and we have some very talented bands and artists here in Ireland. The big promoters would do well to look closer to home as there is a rich selection of emerging and established acts that deserve their interest.

What has been the highlight of your music career so far?

There have been too many adventures to remember a highlight to be honest! We have been fortunate enough to session and share the stage with some great players over the year, which, has always been the greatest pleasure.
Apart from the NOISE Sounds Music Festival, where can fans find out more info on where you will be playing in 2012?

Our new website is currently under construction but the band is on Facebook which is updated with any up and coming shows. It’s been around six years coming but we hope to record our debut album this summer so here’s to 2012!

The North Strand Kontra Band will be leading a masterclass and live performance and the NOISE Sounds Music Festival 2012. More information on how to play on the same stage or register for the workshop is here.

Liz and Yvonne Kane first came to national and international attention during the three year period where they toured as bandmembers with accordion player, Sharon Shannon. Having travelled all over the world and sharing their love of Irish Traditional Music with fans as well as teaching students, The Kane Sisters are showing no signs of slowing down. NOISE caught up with the duo for a chat!

You were taught music by your Grandfather, fiddle-player Jimmy Mullen, did he pass on any invaluable advice to you as musicians?

Yes we were taught by Sligo musician Mary Finn and our Grandad Jimmy Mullen. He gave us a huge insight into the music of the great Michael Coleman, a Sligo fiddle player. He taught us to respect and listen to some great older players and study their styles and techniques.

Tell us about you time spent touring with accordion player Sharon Shannon…

We got to know Sharon from playing with her at festivals in Letterfrack over 20 years ago. We lived with Sharon in Galway for awhile and next thing we were off touring the world with her. It was quite the experience!

Your most recent album, ‘Side by Side’, has received great reviews. Were there any particular themes or styles that influenced the albums sound?

The album is based on newly composed tunes from Paddy Fahey, Paddy O’ Brien, Joe Liddy, and Liz has also composed tunes on it.

How do you feel Irish Traditional Music is received by young people?

We feel Irish Traditional Music is thriving among young people. The tradition is alive and well.

Apart from the NOISE Sounds Music Festival, where can fans find more info on where you will be performing in 2012?

We are performing at the National Concert Hall for Paddy’s Day, and we are going on tour in the States from July. All our info is on our website www.thekanesisters.com !

The Kane Sisters will be leading an Irish Trad Session at the NOISE Sounds Music Festival 2012! If you are a young musician aged 13-25 with a passion for Irish Traditional Music, this amazing workshop is for you!
