Ben McHugh, Composer and Musician

Ben McHugh (Beircheart Mac Aodha) b. 1989 is a Composer and Musician from County Dublin, Ireland.
His introduction to music began with playing Acoustic/Electric Guitar & Keyboard/Synthesiser in various student bands, continuing on to studying Cello academically in NUI Maynooth.
Recently he has become more heavily interested in musical composition and electronic improvisation
with a view towards working with cross arts and open space collaboration. As an undergraduate student of Music in NUI Maynooth; he has studied Cello with Rosemary Flanagan, Composition with Dr. Martin O’ Leary and Computer Music with Dr. Gordon Delap. He has also attended master classes with John McLachlan and Kevin Volans at the Irish composition summer school 2010.
Recently he has completed composition studies within the Erasmus exchange program with renowned Czech composer Vít Zouhar; based in Olomouc, Czech Republic. He is also a member of the Lucan Electro-Acoustic Youth Orchestra under the direction of Marc Balbirnie whom he works with regularly.
He has worked with the NUI Maynooth Chamber Orchestra, the ConTempo quartet, the Liffey Valley Orchestra and with the Cellist Eoin Kenny.

New ‘in progress’ works include: a 3 movement Symphonic work entitled ‘Siansa na hAislingí’,
a Cello Sonata, a short work written for the ConTempo String Quartet titled ‘Kámen(Stone)’,
a new project for the LEAYO, a Violin and Cello work for the Quangle ensemble,
a song for Synthesiser and Soprano named ‘A Rose’ and a commission for a Chamber Orchestral work named ‘life:Stream’ for the Liffey Valley Orchestra based in Co. Kildare, Ireland. ‘life:Stream’ is hoped to be premièred at the IAYO Festival of Youth Orchestras in the National Concert Hall,
Dublin in February 2011.
