Donna Dunne and the French Kissing Cobras
Posted on Thursday, October 29th, 2009
Donna began singing at the age of sixteen with the arrival of a karaoke machine one Christmas. What started out as entertaining family and friends at house parties and singing at weddings lead to a more professional approach to music. Fuelled by a desire to sing and perform Donna started to sing in a covers band in 2005, playing around the country with a live 5 piece band.
During this time Donna also auditioned for X-factor and other talent shows helping to build her confidence as a performer. In 2008 she began to pen her own lyrics and seek her own style of music and vocal delivery. What began as short poems and little notes previously scribbled over the years developed into song structures with verses, choruses, etc.
A support slot for Luan Parle earlier this year created quite a stir when the crowd witnessed Donna performing some acoustic blues numbers she had written- such was the power in her voice that it even attracted interest from management. Donna was also interviewed and performed live on Dublins hit station FM104.
Whilst being able to play guitar (“albeit badly”- she jokes!) Donna sought the help of other musicians to help create her sound and formed her own band- newly dubbed The French Kissing Cobras. After a few line-up changes Donna is now comfortable and confident with the musicians she is working with- each adding their own flavour to the mix. Her main song writing partner / arranger is Conor Brady- band leader of the Cobras.
Donna’s dedication and enthusiasm to her music is evident in her energetic live performances- and behind the scenes when she is working in her Studio writing and recording. With a wide range of influences and idols (notably Elvis Presley) Donna describes her sound as a Bluesy Jazzy mix of Country and Southern Rock- with a slight emphasis on Rock!
Currently, Donna is writing and recording material with plans to release a single in the near future. As always live performances will help further the awareness of her music. The Dublin venue Pravda has invited Donna back to perform again as a headline act after playing to a packed venue in Sept. Other Dublin venues have also expressed an interest in bookings at this time.
At the moment Donna’s priorities are to gain more exposure through television appearances, radio play, interviews and live performances. Due to the sound and style of the music and its professional delivery, obtaining support gigs in recognised venues will help raise her profile and public awareness.
Donna’s sound and style is developing as a natural progression, allowing her to be more creative and explore other influences. Her performing and recording standards are getting higher and her song writing skills shows a strong, creative maturity in her lyrics.
