Mrs Adams’ Victory

A short story by, Michelle Mangan
Mrs. Adams was in her sitting room, kneeling on a hearthrug by the fire, stitching assiduously. All of her concentration and effort had gone into making her quilt the best in the whole of Tisdale.
How she desperately wanted to win this year. She was on a low income, as her pension wasn’t enough to keep her going.
Every year she had been beaten by something as small as a stray stitch. £500 would soon be hers, hopefully.
The day of the competition came at last. Mrs. Adams found it difficult to walk all the way into town. The palm of her hand was swollen and red, as she was holding onto her walking stick for dear life.
Under a scorching, hot sun, Mrs. Adams stood, painstakingly, for over an hour while the judging took place. Due to the beaming look on the judge’s faces, the seemed to like hers.
Without further ado, the judges stepped onto the podium to announce the winner.
“We are proud to present the £500 to………Mrs. Adams!” one exclaimed.
The crowd applauded as Mrs. Adams sauntered up to the podium. She accepted her prize with gratitude.
“Thank you,” she smiled.
“I wonder how much a sports car is!”
